ABOUT MANALI

Manali "Valley of the Gods," is deeply rooted in Hindu mythology, with its name derived from Manu-Allaya, meaning "the abode of Manu," who is believed to have stepped off his ark here to recreate human life after a great flood. Manali is a British-era hill station, and finally a premier tourist destination in the Himalayas.

Sage Manu is believed to have settled in this area after the great deluge, making it a sacred location. The Manu Temple in Old Manali is dedicated to him. Legend holds that the Pandavas stayed here during their exile. Bhim married the local demoness Hidimba, and their son Ghatotkachh was born here. The 16th-century Hidimba Devi Temple is a major landmark. Following Indian independence, particularly after the 1960s, improved connectivity turned it into a bustling, popular hill station. It serves as a gateway to trekking in the Himalayas and the scenic road to Leh.
